Public school districts employ teachers, support staff, and administrators to achieve their educational goals for students. Employee compensation is comprised of salary/wages and benefits (e.g., health benefits, including vision and dental; and pension benefits, as regulated by state law).
Teachers and administrators with a teaching credential at Cabrillo Unified School District (CUSD) are represented by the Cabrillo Unified Teachers' Association (CUTA), and employment terms are managed by contract, with a 'step and column' salary schedule, based on years of service and educational attainment. Pensions are managed through the California Public State Teachers' Retirement System (CALSTRS).
Support staff and other administrators are represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA). Employment terms, including salary schedules, for CSEA members, are similarly negotiated with CUSD and approved by the Governing Board per contract. Pensions are managed through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
Salaries for remaining, Non-Bargaining Unit jobs, I.e., not qualifying for either CUTA or CSEA representation, are determined through salary schedule and minimum wage increases approved by the Governing Board.
As required by State law, the Superintendent employment contract and subsequent renewals are approved by the Governing Board. Other administrator contracts and renewals are approved by the Superintendent. Salaries for administrator and Confidential Employees are also determined by Governing Board approved salary guidelines.

*For CSEA employees hired after July 1, 2011, salary schedule rates include employee responsibility for CalPERS pension contribution. Cabrillo Unified pays for the employee portion of CALPERS pension contribution for employees hired on or before July 1, 2011.
